In its latest issue, the journal Réseaux looks at the cross-influence of data science and the social sciences of politics.
In a period of so-called "crisis" and "transformation" of political participation, the Web, especially in its 2.0 use, offers citizens and political actors new possibilities of action and expression, and this on a totally new scale. However, the analysis of these digital devices often exceeds the processing capacities of "traditional" social science methods, even if only in terms of data volumes. At the same time, recent developments in data science - which aims to extract useful information from large digital databases by following a process inherited from data mining (extraction, storage and indexing, analysis and categorization, visualization) - have allowed for a better understanding of digital terrains. The journal publishes studies on the content of political party websites, online petitions (e-petitioning), and the number of visitors to and participation in political blogs in France.
