The European Data Protection Regulation came into force on May 25.
Four months after its entry into force, the CNIL has received 3767 complaints compared to 2294 complaints over the same period in 2017: an increase of 64%. According to the CNIL, "beyond just professionals, individuals are taking hold of this new framework for the protection of personal data."
The CNIL, moreover, has recorded 3 million visits to its website since May 25.
The importance that the French give to the use of their personal data is the subject of several surveys and polls each year (Barometer of the confidence of the French in the digital, Barometer of the CNIL, Barometer BNP-Paribas, among others). Invariably, these surveys highlight a discrepancy between the perception of risks and practices of the French.
With the RGPD coming into force, questions shifted in 2018 to the degree of knowledge the French had of their rights, in general, and of the RGD, in particular.
April 2018: 52% of French people had not heard of the RGPD
According to a survey conducted by IFOP for the thinktank Renaissance numérique, 46% of French people claim to know their rights in this area, but only 5% admit to knowing them "completely".With the exception of the right to object (which 47% say they have already used), the French admit to making little use of their rights in terms of personal data protection: right to rectification/deletion, right to access and right to information.)
58% of French people said in April 2018 that they had not heard of the RGPD, despite its strong topicality. "This can be explained, explains Renaissance Numérique, by the treatment, both institutional and media, that has been done so far, which has focused on the issue of the implementation of the regulation by companies and professionals. The debates have remained confined to the circle of legal experts and stakeholders in the management of data collected by companies.
The proportion of French people who have already heard of the RGPD drops to 35% among blue collar workers, compared to 59% of executives and higher intellectual professions.
Although the proportion of French people who have already heard of the RGPD remains relatively high (42%), a tiny minority know exactly what it is (9%).
According to a survey conducted by IFOP on behalf of SendinBlue, in February 2018, 24% of French people had already heard of the RGPD.
