The eighth edition of the Barometer on the uses of digital books, set up jointly by the Syndicat national des Éditeurs, the Société des Gens de Lettres and SOFIA, is based on a survey conducted by OpinionWay among 2006 people and 506 users of digital books.
The number of digital readers has been stable for several years: 20% of the French population over 15 years old, or 10 million people.
While their numbers seem to be leveling off, the Barometer does observe an intensification and diversification of practices: 26% of digital readers report reading more than before (compared to 21% in 2017) and 20% report buying more than before (only 16% in 2017).
Tablets and smartphones: the preferred media for digital books
Nearly half of the readers use several devices to read digital books, with a balanced use between the tablet (35%), the smartphone (34%) and the laptop (33%). However, 23% continue to use dedicated e-readers.22% of e-book readers have already given a digital book as a gift (+9%).
Finally, we discover in this Barometer that 43% of digital book readers have already purchased the printed version as a complement.
