Is the Internet still open? Is it still free and decentralized as it was in the beginning? Is it safe? Is the education to the web tools sufficient for everyone to play a role?
The Mozilla Foundation, which created the Firefox browser and several open web technologies, has undertaken a " health check" of the Internet .
Through this exercise, which the Mozilla Foundation wishes to open to contributions, the Mozilla Foundation alerts the public to the threats facing the Internet, but also to bring out solutions. "What is the health check of the Internet? How do we understand and diagnose it? We see these conversations as necessary and timely. Our individual actions affect the health of the Internet ecosystem. We need to recognize which elements are healthy in order to take positive steps to strengthen it and which elements are at risk in order to avoid actions that weaken it."
Combining information from several sources, this health check brings together data on five key themes:
- Open innovation (Is it open?)
- Digital inclusion (Who is welcome online?)
- Decentralization (Who controls the Internet?)
- Privacy and security (Is it safe?)
- Internet Education (Who can succeed online?)
Version 1.0 of the Mozilla-initiated report will be released at the end of the year. The report should allow to set measurable criteria for the health of the Internet in the long term, but also to promote local initiatives to solve the problems encountered.
"The good news, " according to Mozilla Foundation Executive Director Mark Surman, "is that we can have an impact on the health of the Internet. We can build new parts and teach people how best to take advantage of what's available to them. We can point out what's wrong and make it better.Référence :
