Born of a partnership between the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, the French Institute, the International Organization of the Francophonie and the University Agency of the Francophonie, the Dictionnaire des francophones (DDF) already lists more than 500,000 words and expressions, twice as many as other reference dictionaries such as Le Grand Robert.

General dictionaries of French focus on standard, common French, in relation to which social (slang, colloquial words, etc.) or geographical (Belgicisms, Québécismes, etc.) varieties are situated.The goal of the DDF is to describe in a single resource all the words of French, regardless of the region or language register in which they are used, in order to provide access to an instantaneous, constantly updated image of French in the world.
"It is not a matter of prescribing a correct French that should be used rather than another, i.e. a language standard, but of giving the most accurate account possible of usage to enable users to choose the expression best suited to the situation.

In the Dictionnaire des francophones, all varieties of French are presented together and placed on an equal footing. Each of these varieties is a standard within the region of the Francophonie in which it is spoken.A participatory dictionary
Everyone can contribute to the DDF in their own way by adding entries, examples, participating in the discussion forums, reporting or validating information. This contribution is supervised. The general structure of the Dictionary of French Speaking People cannot be modified.The discussion spaces that will be developed in 2021 will be areas of exchange that will aim to provide additional information not directly present in the articles of the Dictionary of French speakers. There will be three of them: a discussion space for etymology, a space reserved for form and a space dedicated to meaning and usage.
Choice of inputs
The Dictionnaire des francophones is intended to be representative of the diversity of the French language.All words, as long as they belong to the French language, can be included. One will therefore find words from many different French-speaking countries, words of everyday language and technical terms, insults as well as compliments, new as well as old words, and even abuses of language. The same word can be written in various ways and each of these forms can be given a separate entry, as long as its existence is proven by examples of usage.
