The Barometer of French confidence in the digital still highlighted in 2017 that the main fear of the French is the protection of personal data. 77% believe, for example, that it is risky to save their bank details online. Since 2009, the main brakes on confidence are "hacking of my data, identity theft, data consulted by someone else".
81% of French people adopt at least one avoidance or protection behavior according to this study.
Similarly, the Digital Barometer tracks these issues.
The CNIL has also conducted a survey on French people's privacy practices and found that the search for browsing comfort motivates certain privacy practices such as the use of ad blockers.
"On rising practices such as the use of an ad blocker (36% of Internet users), 89% of users seek to improve their browsing comfort when only 26% use it to protect their personal information. When services want to access information deemed too intrusive, Internet users adopt more restrictive reflexes. Geolocation seems to be of particular concern to them: one out of two users has already blocked it on their smartphone or refused to share it with a website (41% do not want to share it with social networks).Regarding specific solutions to protect personal data, while only 11% say they read privacy policies in full, 45% of respondents have implemented obfuscation strategies by providing false information (half of them to avoid being targeted or canvassed) and 18% have already taken steps to remove public content about them on the Internet."
It has recently published a mapping of privacy protection tools and practices.
In this context, the government has launched a cyber protection awareness kit, available on the cybermalveillance.gouv.fr platform. The kit includes educational content: videos, memos... 4 topics are covered: password management, the distinction between professional and personal use, phishing, and security on cell phones. This kit is intended for individuals and small businesses.
