Locating oneself, searching for an itinerary, locating an address, a store or a public building: these ordinary uses of digital technology usually escape the radar of large surveys on digital usage.
A recent note from Mediamétrie tells us that 10.35 million Internet users visited at least one site or application in the " Maps/Compass/Itineraries" subcategory in July 2017, or nearly 7 out of 10 French people.
Every day in July, an average of 8.4 million people used mapping sites or applications to find their way around or search for routes. Of these, ¾ of them preferred the smartphone for these route searches, or 6.3 million daily users.
This note overlaps with the results of the Capacity survey, supported by the Agence du Numérique. According to this survey, 85% of Internet users in France used the Internet or a mobile device in 2016 to "search for information for their travels: an itinerary (car or public transport), an address, a location".
Nearly one in two French motorists surveyed (48%) used a mobile app in 2016 for trip preparation or navigation (85% in the UK, 66% in Europe). According to theCetelem Automotive Observatory, French motorists stand out in Europe for their high level of use of in-dash systems (48% in France, 26% in Europe) and TomTom-type mobile GPS (53% in France, 42% in Europe).
